Letter from Seattle NACE President

Hello NACE family and friends!

Holy crap! I can’t believe it is September. Seriously, how did that happen!?! Our kids are going back to school (kind of), days are starting to get a bit shorter and cooler, we are already drinking pumpkin-spiced everything, and we are still shut down, entirely.

I remember back in April talking with our couples, clients, and kids about how we felt we should be through things by July or August at the latest and that we expected schools and businesses to be returning to a mostly normal course by end of summer. Ironically, at the time, I felt like I was being cautious, as many were hopeful we would be opening again in May and June. WOW, was I wrong!

Taking stock of the devastation of these past several months is overwhelming. So many of our friends and partners in the industry have lost their jobs, closed their businesses, and faced financial hardship and ruin – stress and anxiety and depression are taking a tremendous toll on the health and wellness of our communities and our families.

Seattle NACE and some really incredible leaders from other associations have been working tirelessly to develop safe reopening plans for our industry. We have been in weekly calls with the Governor’s office working through plans to this end. While we are hopeful about the progress we are making during these calls, there is still a lot of work to do. While my hopeful, glass-half-full self is holding my breath for some positive changes in the coming weeks, we need to be prepared for very limited options deep into 2021. Even if things begin to open up this Fall or Winter, capacities and services will remain very limited well into next year.

The importance of community cannot be overstated right now. Stay connected, get involved, and help each other. Lean on your peers and don’t be afraid to ask for help. I miss all of you dearly and can’t wait till I can see you all again.

Because I know how important community is, specifically our NACE family, I wanted to be sure you were up to speed on a few things to help you remain a connected member:

  • Your membership is protected and will remain intact for 120 days beyond the lapse of your renewal date.
  • The National office has established payment plans to help spread out the cost of renewals.
  • The Foundation of NACE has established a relief fund to cover up to $150 of your renewal fees. You just need to email the national office and ask for the reduced rate.
  • We are working on a local relief fund supported by Seattle NACE to support renewals for our members in need (more to come soon).

A tremendous portion of our members and our industry are out of work and we need to lean on each other to help get people back to earning a paycheck. To help our community, I would ask that our industry make use of our jobs board here -

If you have openings available within your company, please post those so we can support getting our members back to work wherever possible. If you are out of work and seeking employment, please post your information on our jobs board so we can share this with our industry.

Lastly, we are working out the details for some creative ways to safely get together, within the State’s guidelines. Keep an eye out for details on our first joint Seattle NACE & Tacoma NACE restaurant takeover and mark your calendars for September 15th – details coming soon.

I miss you all and hope to see you all soon!

If you need me for anything email or call any time.

Be well,

Aaron Shook
